Helping Your Child With Taking Tests

One of the easiest ways to make your child feel comfortable about an approaching examination or a test is by talking to him about it. It's vital that children understand why schools must conduct tests and get used to the idea of taking tests as long as they continue to study. For example, if a child realizes that his parents were taking tests in a university for their post-graduation until the age of 22-23, he would surely understand the absolute relevance of testing in education. It is important that children realise and appreciate the hard work put in by the teachers in preparation of teaching tools and preparing the tests.

Tips for Child Encouragement :

* Parents should encourage the child Parents should encourage the child to prepare for tests a bit in advance. There is nothing wrong with the child feeling competitive with regards to his classmates, but the idea of outscoring everyone shouldn't become an obsession. Children afraid of failing a test are more likely to be anxious when taking a test and are likely to make more mistakes. Make sure that the day preceding a test, at home, is a relaxed family get-together kind of day.
* Discuss with Teachers about Child ProgessMeeting the child's teacher to discuss his progress is crucial for the parents. The teacher's inputs in order to improve upon the child's performance could play a vital role for the parents to realize the areas in which their child is deficient. Children should not be allowed to skip school and prepare for a test. Parents should make sure that the study room of the child is a quiet and comfortable place. They should ensure that the child is well rested on school nights and on the day preceding a test. Children who are well-rested and relaxed are able to pay more attention in class and handle examinations better.
* Hide Your anxiety or unhappiness

Parents should hide their anxiety or unhappiness when they are upset because of a few low test scores of their children. They should try and find out the real cause for such a performance rather than threaten or curse the child. A positive attitude in such times makes the child assured of having parental support during crunch situations.

It is imperative that the child doesn't start assuming that scoring well in some tests is the only way to garner his parent's attention or affections. Even if the test performance isn't very satisfactory, parents should make sure to compliment and encourage the child for the other school activities in which he has done better.
