Creating an Engaging Educational Plan

At the end of five years, many new teachers leave the educational system for good completely burnt out from the world of teaching. Very often, these are potentially good educators with high dreams to engage their students. If only they had one thing going for them, they would have excelled in their mission.

In fact, how many times have you walked out of a lesson thinking that something was lacking in your lesson, but you still can't put a finger on what it is? Chances are, you are probably one of many teachers who need to start by either creating an educationally engaging plan, which is the key to every student's success.An engaging teacher does more than just teach motivating content; s/he finds ways to engage students in areas of classroom management and content based material.

Excellent teachers actually do both together usually without students even noticing that they are being taught. There is no real magic recipe to create an engaging educational plan but the real magic does begin with you and who you are as a person. Here is my advice to help new teachers build the foundations for creating an engaging educational plan of their dreams.

Don't make Discipline Problems Your Enemy

Not every discipline problem needs to be reported. In fact, more than 50% of discipline related issues can be backed up with strategies and tactics to engage the student on a interpersonal level. Even if your students has disobeyed the rule, don't start with reporting the problem right away. Begin first with the student. If the student shows immediate signs of violence or tension, do or say something that will calm that student. Reflect it to the class that you are on the student's side.This will offset the tension the students typically feel in the class.

Show Your Personal Side

As a new teacher you want to brand yourself through positive actions. Are you the approachable type? The tired type? The never ending complaining type? Remember, the image you create is what students see first. This can either make them feel connected or disconnected to who you are and how you teach. Either way, they can see through you and know if you are irritable and tense or calm and excitable.

Teach in a Student Friendly language

Continuing to work with the students is a crucial part of creating an engaging educational plan. when using a new teaching strategy, take note of not only how your class responds on a whole, but pay attention to the finer details like: what makes your students laugh, cry, laugh. Students love when you are approachable especially when you teach. You don't have to be an entertainer, but you do need to be approachable. Basically, try to turn the redirection moments into fun and teachable moments. When you are in-sync with your students, your class will feel it too and will listen to you even more.

Cool Hand Luke, the character played by actor, Paul Newman, and his memorable quotes, more often responses rather than unprompted statements. Yet, taken into everyday context, all are prolific wisdoms that seem commonly appropriate and familiar.

For instance, one Cool Hand Luke quote: "Ain't heard much listenin' to yet. Just everybody handing out rules.", stands out as a generality everyone has experienced at one time or another. A lot of people posture as if their words are rules. Yet, they patently don't listen to what others say.

Another of the Cool Hand Luke quotes: "Nuthin' can be a pretty cool hand.", typifies the character's understanding that "Less is More". And that the more complex things are the more complications are apt to arise.

"Thing about bad food is you got to eat a lot of it." In this Cool Hand Luke quote, "food" is a mere representation of the extremes in the character's life. He knows when it's bad only when he's had too much.

"Boss, when you do somethin' to me, you better do it because you got to or want to. Not because it's your damn job.", is a Cool Hand Luke quote that speaks of man's need to excuse lack of accountability for his actions., particularly those that fly below the radar of human rights and dignity. This quote forces his captors to evaluate their own actions toward men of lesser freedoms.

"Stop beatin' it and stop feedin' off me." is a quote of his realization of exploitation. One individual is sacrificed for the restitution of the egos of the masses. "They just never did get a piece of my mind." This quote is a display of survival. Man can endure anything, including brainwashing. Still, he retains control over his over mind. This quote correctly points out that one human being can never fully control the mind of another.

"Hey Old Man. You home tonight?" Here, in this quote, the character, sensing that the end is near, that he's reached the limit of possibility, attempts to touch the Divine as his last act of redemption. He tries to square himself with God, waiting and hoping for answers. This quote speaks of the fraility of man and the power of the infinite.

"Is that your answer Old Man? Your're a hard case too, ain't You?". In the silence of a darkened church, silence is the only answer the character receives. In summation, he admits, confession-like, he lived as hard and unrelenting as he perceives his Maker to be.

"What we have here is failure to communicate." Cool Hand Luke mimics the words of his "Captain" after Luke's second attempt to escape. His mimicry is a deliberate convolution of the power wielded over him by his prison experience. Like an epitaph on a gravestone, he utters this final quote challenging mankind's obsession for power and addiction to control.
